8th Grade: History through Primary Sources

In this unit, students used primary sources to gain an understanding of life in a New York City tenement. We began the unit by meeting in the library and analyzing primary sources (in this case, the photographs of Jacob Riis). Students were put in pairs and assigned a photograph to analyze and present to the class. After the work shown here, each student wrote an empathy journal from the point of view of an immigrant who lived in a tenement apartment.
