For this mini-unit, I taught the Dewey Decimal System to third graders in a fun and engaging way. Students were assigned roles of either a librarian, a celebrity guest (Batman, Harry Potter, or Junie B. Jones), or a helper. They then acted out skits based on using the Dewey Decimal System to find books for the celebrity guests. The lesson plans and a sample script are below.

Sample Script: My name is Batman. By night, I fight crime in the city of Gotham. By day, I am millionaire Bruce Wayne – shhh, don’t tell anyone!

My computer helps me a lot. It contains lots of general information that I can use when solving mysteries and figuring out what the bad guys are up to. Lately, it’s needed an update. Can you help me find a book of general knowledge that I can use to add to the database?
